About
Biography
Jo Berry’s life changed irrevocably on 12 October 1984, when, aged 27, she awoke to the news that a bomb had exploded at Brighton’s Grand Hotel during the Conservative Party conference—her father, a Tory MP, was staying there. After long hours of anxious waiting, Jo learnt that her father was one of five victims killed in the IRA attack. Growing up in peacetime London, Jo had heard of the threats posed by the IRA, experienced bomb scares, yet never imagined it would affect her family. The tragedy not only took her father but shattered her sense of security and innocence, marking the end of a world where life felt safe, playful and peaceful. This devastating loss weighed heavily on her heart, leading her to confront the realities of war, terrorism, and loss, and irrevocably altering the course of her life.
